10 Tips for Healthy Skin All Winter Long

Keep your skin healthy and soft all winter long with these 10 tips.
Keep your skin healthy and soft all winter long with these 10 tips.

Winter is here… and with winter comes dry, cold air and dry, cracked skin.

Cold air and wind outside combined with heated air in our homes can wreak havoc on our skin. Flakey, ashy skin and inflammation are common in winter months, especially on exposed skin like our cheeks and hands.

But of course, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Read on for 10 tips to keep your skin hydrated and supple throughout the winter months.

1. Layer your moisturizers.

One technique that works especially well in winter (or anytime your skin is very dry) is moisturizer layering.

Begin by applying a serum or oil—or both. Serums contain vitamins and minerals that support your skin’s vital functions. Oils contain emollients and humectants that draw water into your skin.

We suggest layering with Boom Gold followed by Boom Nectar.

Boom Gold is our lightweight, organic facial oil. This all-natural oil contains essential oils for fast-absorbing moisture where you need it most.

After Boom Gold, apply a few drops of Boom Nectar, our moisturizing serum packed with 16 essential oils, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These all-natural ingredients travel to the deeper layers of your skin to soothe and hydrate.

Finally, apply a moisturizing layer with a thick occlusive, like beeswax, to seal in moisture.

We suggest Boomsilk, which contains five all-natural ingredients, including sustainably sourced honey and beeswax with pollen and propolis. Boomsilk moisturizes your skin and forms a protective mantle.

2. Choose exceptionally gentle cleansers.

Harsh ingredients can strip your skin of its natural moisture and leave it vulnerable to cold, dry air. In winter, stick to gentle, soap-free cleansers that remove dirt, makeup and pollutants but leave your skin’s natural moisture behind.

We suggest Boom Clean. This gentle daily cleanser doesn’t contain any soap or harsh ingredients and won’t leave your skin feeling dry or tight.

Boom Clean includes three different ingredients that condition your skin as you wash, for soft, supple skin.

Have dry skin in other places? You can use this cleanser all over your body for gentle cleansing that won’t dry out your skin.

3. Use a humidifier or try a steam treatment.

Another simple way to keep your skin soft and hydrated is to run a humidifier in your home. Humidifiers increase water vapor in the air, which is then absorbed by your skin.

If you don’t have a whole-house humidifier, try using a smaller model in your bedroom at night. It’s good for your skin as well as your respiratory system.

Don’t want to fuss with a humidifier? Try a weekly steam treatment.

Fill a heat-safe bowl with hot water and lean over it. Drape a towel over your head and the bowl to keep the steam in.

Steam opens pores and travels to the skin’s deeper layers to moisturize and soften. Afterward, apply a moisturizing cream with beeswax, like Boomsilk, to help your skin retain the hydration from the steam longer.

For a soothing home spa experience, add a drop or two of your favorite essential oils to the water.

5. Take shorter, cooler showers

A long, hot shower may sound lovely on a cold day. But hot water dissolves and removes the natural oils on your skin… the very oils that help skin retain moisture.

In winter, hot showers can exacerbate itchy, dry skin. Try a shorter, cooler shower instead to keep your skin’s natural barrier intact.

Moisturizers spread more easily when your skin is wet. After a shower or bath, while your skin is still damp, apply a lotion or cream.

Using a barrier moisturizer with beeswax, like Boomsilk, will trap water in your skin and prevent further moisture loss.

6. Drink lots of water.

Want an easy way to increase your skin’s moisture? Increase your body’s moisture by drinking plenty of water.

How much water you need depends on your activity level, climate and health, but experts recommend women consume at least 11.5 cups of fluid daily. This includes water, other drinks and the liquid in the food you eat.

Keep water close at hand and try to drink as soon as you feel thirsty. If you’re very active, drink a full glass of water before you exercise, and keep drinking during and after.

7. Reapply moisturizer often.

Another key to soft skin in winter is reapplying moisturizer whenever you wash or whenever your face feels dry.

It’s easy to get busy and forget or not notice until your skin is very dry. Keep a moisturizer in your purse or pocket for easy touch-ups when needed.

We suggest Boomstick Glo, our moisturizing stick made with sustainably sourced honey, beeswax and organic olive oil.

You can apply this convenient moisturizer anywhere on your body to soothe and soften dry, cracked skin. Use it on your face, lips, the backs of your hands or other dry areas.

Or for quick, liquid moisture, try Boom Calm. Our newest moisturizer is formulated specifically to calm your skin after exposure to extreme weather.

Boom Calm is thin so it glides on easily. Made with all-natural ingredients, this liquid moisturizer contains aloe vera as well as lavender, calendula and geranium essential oils to cool and soothe skin.

Like our other full-body moisturizers, you can apply Boom Calm on your face, neck, arms, legs, hands or any other part of your body.

8. Cover skin after applying moisturizer.

Help dry, damaged skin recover faster by covering it after moisturizing.

If your hands or feet are rough or cracked during the winter months, try applying a thick moisturizing cream like Boomsilk and then covering them with cotton gloves or socks while you sleep.

The fabric will keep moisture in overnight, giving your skin a chance to soak in the ingredients and recover without further drying.

9. Protect your skin from the sun.

It’s easy to forget when the wind is howling and the snow is falling, but UV rays are just as damaging in winter as they are in summer.

Snow can reflect the sun’s rays for a double dose of damage. Whether you’re going sledding with your grandkids, skiing or for a stroll, take extra care to protect your skin from the sun.

Cover your skin when you can to guard against sunburn and drying wind. If you can’t cover your skin, use a high-SPF sunscreen on top of a thick moisturizer for maximum protection from the elements.

10. Stay ahead of dry skin.

It’s important to be proactive when it comes to your skin. Don’t wait until your skin is dry, scaly or flakey to protect it.

Moisturize daily and drink lots of water to stay ahead of the game. You may still get dry spots, but staying on top of your skin care can help prevent painful cracks and dull-looking skin.

Your skin’s care is so important. We hope these tips will help you keep your skin soft and healthy all winter long.
