I went to a photo shoot on Monday and I got to bond with a great lady by the name of Cindy Joseph. She’s been modeling for 12 years, but get this: She was almost 50-years-old when she got discovered. Her story is soinspiring.
Meet Cindy Joseph, silver-haired and proud!
Cindy getting prepped on set.
Before she began working in front of the camera, Cindy was making her living behind the scenes a makeup artist. After 27 years in the biz, she retired and shortly after was approached by a casting agent on the street. “I thought it was a joke. I thought someone was playing a trick on me. But the next day the agent called and asked me to be in a D&G campaign. That was in 1999.” Once the ad hit, a friend encouraged her to get an agent and Cindy signed with Ford Models. She’s still with them today. “I’m doing the same things I did as a makeup artist—travelling and going to shoots—only as a model instead,” Cindy says. How’s that for a second career?
Cindy in More magazine.
And if that’s not impressive enough, Cindy started her own line of beauty products two years ago called Boom! By Cindy Joseph. The collection includes BOOMSILK, an allover moisturizer made with organic honey, olive oil and beeswax and three BOOMSTICKS for shimmer, color and moisture. She sent them to me and I’m so into BOOMSTICK Color ($24), which is like a berry-tinted cream blush stick you can put on your lips and eyelids, too.
One thing BOOM! doesn’t do is prey on women’s fears about getting older. As Cindy puts it: “My line is not about concealing, fixing or covering things up, it’s about bringing out the way you look naturally when you’re turned on to life and having a good time. I don’t like the words ‘anti-aging.’ I’m pro-age!”
You gotta love this woman. Are you as inspired by her as I am?
BOOM! founder (& model) Cindy Joseph shares her day.
Cindy Joseph is the CEO and founder of BOOM! by Cindy Joseph, an organic makeup line that is 100 percent paraben- and phthalate-free. After working as a celebrity makeup artist for 25 years, Joseph was discovered as a model at the age of 49 and has appeared in major campaigns for designers like Dolce & Gabbana. Here’s a taste of her busy schedule and healthy lifestyle.
7:00 AM
I get up and do two sunrise salutations (yoga) in the bedroom. It wakes my body up and gets me limber and ready for the day. Then I head down to kitchen for a fruit smoothie or watermelon.
8:00 AM
I throw on my cargos and a T-shirt and go into my home office to work, starting with my customer service emails. I try to respond to every one of them. Next, I plan a phone call to the bee-keepers in Hawaii that supply my ingredients for many of the products in my line, followed by a Skype meeting with my web marketing team about our next “Saturday with Cindy” video.
11:00 AM
Check in with my bookers at Ford Models to get the details for my Target go-see this afternoon and find out if a booking we have been working on with a major magazine has confirmed and if a clothing catalog job is shooting in NYC or out of town.
11:15 AM
I am ready to move my body! I jump rope 100 times and do a few push-ups just to get my blood circulating. Then I sit on my front porch and take in the nature around me before heading back to the kitchen to make a salad of celery, fresh corn, and garbanzo beans. I take that to the porch to eat, drink some water, and relax. It is so important to make my meals pleasurable and relaxing.
12:45 PM
Get dressed up a bit and do my hair and makeup for a Target a go-see. One of the best parts of having a makeup line is that I know exactly what I’m going to use.
2:00 PM
At my Target go-see, I meet other models I know and have a fun visit with them while waiting for my turn. Go-sees are often where I get turned on to what women are seeing, doing, and thinking about their age and beauty. I want to keep talking, but must head back out of town to avoid the traffic.
3:30 PM
I start my intense workout with my trainer Vadim at his private studio in Scarsdale. He takes me to an old basement to lift a heavy tire and slam a ball on a rope into the wall. Then I put on boxing gloves and get really winded. By the time I’m done, I’m covered in sweat and feel exhausted and spent and hungry!
5:30 PM
At home, I can now have a nice mellow visit with my fiancé and share how each of our days went. And since we live with three others (we love group living!), we chat with other housemates while preparing a dinner of vegetable casserole and salad. We eat on the porch and watch the sun set over the Hudson River. It is stunningly gorgeous. We have watermelon for dessert and a tiny bit of Lindt dark chocolate with sea salt, which is a rare treat I succumb to from time to time.
8:00 PM
We race into the living room to watch one of my favorite shows, So You Think You Can Dance!
9:30 PM
I finally take my shower and climb into bed for cuddling with my fiancé.
During her twenty-five year tenure as a professional makeup artist, Cindy Josephsays she “learned the skin on our bodies is the same from the top of our head to the tip of our toes. To protect, nourish and moisturize your whole body, all you need is one product, as long as it’s safe and does the job.”
To that end, she created her BOOMSTICK Trio: Glo, Glimmer and Color ($24.00 each; $68.00 sold together), as well as a luxurious cream. That cream, BOOMSILK ($32.00; 4oz), is the line’s core product. It does not contain sunscreen (but can be used with any sunscreen you choose) and can be applied around your eyes, on your face, over your lips and down your neck. Joseph says that by, “eliminating unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients, such as, emulsifiers [used for keeping the components blended], mineral oil [a low cost petroleum by-product], glycerine [used for spreadability and continuous dampness], parabens and phthalates [preservatives], and sunscreens of any kind, you can be rest assured that BOOMSILKis pure, clean, safe and 100% organic.”
Now that you know what BOOMSILK doesn’t contain, here’s what it does have:
Organic extra virgin olive oil, organic beeswax, organic propolis, organic pollen, organic honey, and Vitamin E
“It’s created by beekeepers, on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, says Joseph, “Along with these magical ingredients, plenty of love and attention go into each pot for your safety and pleasure.” So, how does it stack up? I used it at night, around my eyes, as well as on my face and neck. And then I used it again the next day, under my sunscreen and foundation. Girls, I am loving this! The creamy, pale gold color and faint honey smell are so appealing. It goes on easily, feels great and absorbs well (I was actually tempted to eat it, but that’s just me.)
It might be a tad greasy for you twentysomethings, but for the rest of us, it’s a like a spa in a jar. I especially loved that a single product could do so many tasks. After I used it on my face, I tried it on my hands, elbows, legs (post-shaving!) and even feet — it was terrific for everything! This is now my new fave rave — cannot get enough of the stuff! Tuck it in your pocket for summer getaways; perfect for streamlining your packing!
Next up was the BOOMSTICK COLOR ($24.00). This is a sheer, berry colored stick that is said to flatter all skin tones. It’s based on a color that Cindy has used on photo shoots for over twenty-five years. I tried it on my cheeks — fantastic! Blended right in, and gave me a healthy, vibrant look even without foundation. As demonstrated in Cindy’s tutorial, I also used it on my forehead and neck. The overall effect was great: warm, healthy and natural-looking color. I was a little less keen about its effect on my eyelids (made me look like a victim of domestic violence, haha!) and lips (too subtle for me — I am strictly a red lip sort of gal) though I can see that it could work for others on these areas.
The second in the group is BOOMSTICK GLIMMER ($24.00). This is a subtle, sheer stick with a hint of color and a nice bit of sparkle to it. Again, the application was great — the stuff just glides on, no pulling or tugging at all. I used it over BOOMSTICK COLOR and got a nice, shimmery effect that was perfect for evening. I tried it on my eyes too — a bit muted for my taste, but could be nice for some. Same for the lips — it offers just a hint of sheen and color, so, for you au naturel gals, this one could work nicely. As I said above, for me it’s fire engine red and red only!
Finally, I tried BOOMSTICK GLO ($24.00). This one was kind of puzzling to me. I did not see what it did that the cream did not except that it was in stick formula, which might be handy for air travel. Otherwise, it seemed less useful than the others and does not seem to me to be essential. And it’s good to know that all the BOOMSTICKS are made with the environmentally conscientious woman in mind. No extra packaging, no animal testing, no parabens — only safe ingredients. For more info, go to:www.boombycindyjoseph.com.

“Aging should be viewed as a big letter V, an ever-expanding “life” adventure, not like a “hill” as in “you’re over it,” says this silver-haired super model
Hate glancing at yourself in the mirror because you look and feel old? Time to put on a “new attitude” about growing older according to silver-haired beauty, Cindy Joseph, 61, who says that “age is beautiful and valuable and something to celebrate.” This former makeup artist turned Ford Classic super model turned CEO of her own skin care and cosmetics line, BOOM! By Cindy Joseph, reveals a big beauty secret: “Life gets better if you find it “good” in the first place.”
So, how did Joseph come by these words of wisdom and why create a skin-care/cosmetics line in the first place if we are supposed to welcome old age? Joseph’s philosophy explains it best.
A Natural Beauty Style Is Born
As a high school student growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Joseph spent hours studying beauty and fashion magazines. She loved experimenting with beauty products, using them on herself and her friends. The more research she did, the more her perceptions about beauty changed. She began to oppose society’s increasing emphasis on superficial beauty and the self-esteem issues it created in women.
Her desire to instill a healthy, more balanced perception of beauty in women made her realize she could best accomplish this if she was “in the game.” She began her career as a makeup artist for celebrities and models in the late 70′s. Over the next 25 years, Joseph’s natural makeup style and her message about bringing forward a woman’s character, personality and natural beauty, rather than masking it, catapulted her into elite circles.
Her talent for bringing out the natural beauty in women got her involved in the Esprit de Corps ad campaigns with Oliviero Toscani. In Paris, she worked with European magazine and advertising clients. By the time she arrived in New York City, she had reached the top of her industry as she applied her makeup talents to super models and celebrities for famous fashion and beauty photographers.
Going Gray Pays Off Big Time
When she reached the age of 49, instead of moping around about getting older, Joseph embraced her age, got rid of her blonde colored hair and opted to let all her silver gray hair grow out.
“I realized the longer I was living, the happier I was getting,” relates Joseph. “I started talking about it, but all the while I was using a hair color to cover some of my silver hair. I realized that not only did I feel like I was lying, but others would not see that age could be happy, passionate, sensual, and all the wonderful things it is if I continued hiding the evidence.”
The day she clipped off the last of her blonde locks, a casting agent approached her on a street in Greenwich Village. She was asked if they could take a photo of her. Oh sure, she thought. But, going natural paid off for Joseph. She got big bucks. In fact. Joseph was called to model for the Dolce and Gabbana campaign photographed by Steven Meisel. And, it was this project that ignited her career as a Classic model with Ford Models, Inc. She learned that older women as models were in demand! Her modeling career has been flourishing ever since.
Over Sixty And Just Warming Up
At age 61, Joseph is still grabbing life by the tail. Today, when women are bombarded by age erasing beauty products, Joseph presents a pro-age skin care and cosmetic line! Say, what? To explain, let’s backtrack just a bit.
“As a Boomer age model, I have loved representing women my age in beauty and fashion,” says Joseph. ” I learned that women over 35 were yearning to see older women represented in beauty and fashion advertising. I get approached daily by women thanking me for showing them they could let their silver hair show proudly and that age is something to celebrate.”
In the midst of this philosophy, Joseph reflects the truth. She has nothing to hide. “Your genetic make-up affects your skin quality the most,” she explains. “Next is intake, which includes what you eat, what medicine you take, and if you smoke. Equal to that are exercise, sleep, fresh air and sunshine. So, for healthy skin, it’s important to do those things, and, eat a healthy diet of mostly fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Also, it’s vital to use products that are one hundred percent safe ingredients on your skin. Remember, nicotine ‘patches’ work because your skin absorbs what you put on it and this goes into your organs!”
Aging Gracefully Requires Going Natural
Health experts will tell you that the best choices in skin care and beauty products are the ones with the least harmful chemicals. To that end, Joseph has worked tirelessly to come up with her own all natural line of products made with such ingredients as Organic extra virgin olive oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic propolis, Organic pollen, Organic honey and Vitamin E. Boomstick Color (a universal color stick), Boomstick Glo (a moisturizer stick), Boomstick Glimmer (shimmer stick) and Boomsilk (a body cream), make up her philosophy “package.”
“I created these products to celebrate the beauty we, as women, were born with,” Joseph explains. “They allow your personality and character to come through with the sensual glow of joy. I want women to know that you don’t have to ‘put on your face’ anymore. You already have one. Let it shine.”
Because when all is said and done about age and aging, it seems to happen from the inside out. Joseph sums up the whole aging and staying beautiful process in just these few words: “Taking joy in living is truly a woman’s best cosmetic.”
I loved this review from Lori at FacingFifty.com. Thanks Lori!
“Confession time first. I love make-up. I do. It’s a thing I’ve done since I was ‘allowed” to wear some (in my teens). I have tried just about every eye-color out there, I have tried high-end and “a-hem” low-end foundations (hey, you never know when the perfect one will show up) and I am pretty sure that I am addicted to lipstick. Gloss, lip color, stain and more gloss. You name it. Right now in my purse I have 10 different lip sticks and glosses. From Chanel to NYC. I’ve even tried to plump up my lips with that burning plumper lipgloss, because my top lip is kind of thin (and getting thinner with age) but seriously I do not condone pain for the sake of a fat lip. I’ve tried lotions from Dove to Dr. Perricone. And moisturizer. Oh, I will search high-and low for a good moisturizer.
Then I came across BOOM! by Cindy Joseph. I found her name cross-posted on FB and contacted her office to see if they would send me some samples for my first review. A few days later a box arrived. In it was 3 small tubes, (can fit in your hand). BOOMstick Glo, BOOMstick Color and BOOMstick Glimmer. And a 4 oz jar of BOOMsilk.
I started with the tubes. The BOOMstick Glo is made of all-natural ingredients; organic virgin oil, organic beeswax, vitamin E, organic pollen and organic propolis and …… It glides over my skin and I looked very glowy. I’ve since learned to use this sparingly. I love it on my lips.
Second tube I tried was the BOOMstick Color. This is meant to be the perfect color for any skin tone. It can be used on your lips, your cheeks even your eyelids. I tried all the spots (including high on my forehead and in the hollow of my neck).
The final tube is BOOMstick Glimmer. I really love this champagne color. It instantly makes my cheekbones glow. I use it on my cheekbone, my clavacle, the corner of my eyes (inside and out) and on the lip color. Love this!!!
BOOM! by Cindy Joseph
And finally, the glorious BOOMsilk. I have another confession to make here. The BOOMsilk was meant to be a giveaway. But after I read about it I realized that it was one of the most important aspects of the BOOM! experience. I made an executive decision and felt it would be better for me to review the moisturizer properly. I have used this every night and sometimes in the morning for nearly two months. I’ve used it on my face and hands. One of the reasons I was looking for something natural and moisturizing is that my skin is dry and I’ve noticed that it’s been looking dull. Not any more!!
“Handmade by beekeepers in Hawaii with 100% organic ingredients, BOOMSILK will moisturize, heal and protect every inch of your face and body.” ~from BOOMSILK.
By now, I’m sure you can tell this review is a very positive one. The BOOM! by Cindy Joseph product has made me a fan, addicted to more.
I was able to interview Cindy about the business, the product and her philosophy on women and theembracement of your age. None of that “anti-aging” talk! It was a fascinating interview that I’ll be posting. Please stay tuned.
In the meantime; please check out BOOM! by Cindy Jospeph you will not be disappointed. www.boombycindyjoseph.com and do please let me know what you think of this review!
Getting outside and into nature sounds like a relatively easy and attractive thing to do. Yet once we have done everything necessary to protect ourselves from the bugs, the pollen, the poison ivy, the deer ticks, and oh, that most dangerous of all the elements, the sun, many of us would rather grab the TV remote and enjoy the nature channel. Why take the risk of actually going out of doors?
My guess is, if you are reading this magazine, you’re probably not the type to run from the sun or park yourself on the couch out of fear. However, we’ve all been inundated with information about the risks of UV rays. And its true that excess sun exposure (the kind that burns you) is bad for your health.
In my view, though, we’ve been lead to fear the sun far too much. We’re told that being in the sun at all will prematurely age our skin and maybe give us skin cancer. Sunscreen companies are making a bundle from our fears, and convincing us to slather ourselves in chemicals that are themselves potentially hazardous and not adequately studied.
What gets lost in translation — at least for a lot of people — is that a moderate amount of sun is vital for your well-being. And in my experience, people who spend time outdoors in the sun look a lot healthier than their sun-fearing counterparts.
I know Experience Life has a great article on the importance of balanced sun exposure in the July/August 2009 issue, so if you haven’t read that, do.
The bottom line is that sun is good for us. Always was, always will be. We need the sun for everything. It is the source of life. Nothing would exist without it.
We probably don’t even know yet all of the hidden benefits related to getting enough sun. One important benefit we do know about is vitamin D — a critical nutrient we synthesize best from sunshine and that helps protect us from all kinds of diseases and health conditions.
But did you know that if you wash too soon after sunbathing the vitamin D does not get created?
It turns out that vitamin D is synthesized in the top layer of our skin that contains sebum, an oily, waxy substance that serves as the body’s natural moisturizer. This is where the chemical reactions triggered by sunshine occur and make vitamin D.
But if you wash your skin with soap and water too soon after coming indoors, you wash off a lot of the sebum-containing vitamin D before it has a chance to be fully formed and absorbed by your body.
Some health experts (check out the video below from Dr. Mercola) say that it can take up to 48 hours for the vitamin-D producing reaction to be completed. So they recommend avoiding bathing for a day or so, or (perhaps more realistic) simply rinsing your arms, legs and torso with water during your showers rather than lathering your entire body up. (You can still use soap under your arms, in the groin area and wherever else you need to, of course).
Anyway, all of this means that being a little dirty and sweaty for a while after being outdoors is good for you, too!
And there’s more: Did you know that when sun’s rays hit your retina your body is stimulated to produce more melanin, therefore protecting you from sunburn? Consider taking those sunglasses off for a while when you’re out there. Remember, your eyes are designed to adjust to light.
If you have had too much of the sun, you will know it. Trust your instincts. And remember, houses, hats and clothes are the safest sunblocks you can use — much better than pouring chemical filled lotions on your skin.
My approach: I spend as much time outdoors as feels good, I wear a hat and sleeves if I feel I’m in danger of getting too much sun, and I leave the sunglasses and the sun block in my beach tote unless they are a must.
You can figure out the approach that’s right for you. But do head out into the great outdoors and soak up some sunshine. It’s our friend!
The cover feature entitled, “Beauty Through the Ages” included a six-page Q+A with Cindy, which discussed her career as a model turned entrepreneur. It also discussed her organic make-up line BOOM! By Cindy Joseph and her mission to make aging beautiful.
Cindy stated, “I believe women of every age are beautiful and that there is nothing to conceal or hide, only to enjoy and celebrate. Older women have beauty in the character they have earned with age. Young women are beautiful as well, with their shape, size and unique features they were born with.”
A prominent color photo of Cindy Joseph was featured on the cover of the publication. Additionally, color images were included on the masthead page, the table-of-contents and within her Q+A feature story. Cindy was credited as founder and CEO of BOOM! By Cindy Joseph.
